About LANTIF

The Laconian Antiquities Foundation (LANTIF) was established in 2012.  Our goal is to support valuable archaeological research in Laconia, Greece, specifically the excavation at Ayios Vasileios, near Xerokambi, Laconia, in the Spartan plain.

This multi-year project is excavating a site that may have been a major palatial centre on the Spartan plain. Initial work has uncovered caches of weapons, fine pottery, detailed frescoes, and most importantly, the first "linear B" tablets found in Laconia.

During the current economic crisis in Greece, funding for valuable projects like this has disappeared, and many projects have been abandoned. We want to ensure that research continues, and that this site is not abandoned.

The potential for this site goes beyond simply the rediscovery of an important part of the history of Western civilisation. There is the potential for economic spin-offs and tourism revenue. The project also provides a valuable educational opportunity for international student archaeologists. And perhaps most importantly, the project is a good-news story at a time when Greece needs it most.

This is an opportunity for Nova Scotians, and Canadians to participate directly in this discovery.

LANTIF is a non-profit organization in Nova Scotia, Canada. We are governed by a volunteer board.

100% of funds raised are used to support the excavation at Ayios Vasileios.
